Question Number: 3254

RE: REC

franco of , IN USA asks...

When an AR calls a foul that the center did not see how does the AR communcate what the foul is or more importantly if it is a DFK or IDFK.

Answer provided by Referee burbidge

Referees have their own signals and these signals would be communicated to the ARs before the start of the game. Usually referees advise ARs that they only need assistance in calling the DFKs - the fouls to the body - not the IDF (very rare). The AR would raise the flag and indicate direction for DFKs. Hope this helps.

Answer provided by Referee Keith Contarino

First thing I tell my AR's is "If you're calling a foul I didn't see, don't expect me to know what it was or which direction the kick goes". They should follow the procedures outlined in the USSF Guide to procedures for referees, AR's and Fourth Officials. This publication does not go over what to do for an IFK which is why many referees tell their AR's to only call DFKs. However, oftentimes I'll miss dangerous play or impeding and my AR will see it. I instruct them at pregame to raise the flag and wiggle it as for a DFK but to then grab their shirts or shorts and wiggle them before giving the directional so I know it's an IFK. I also tell them if they've called a foul punishable with an IFK and I do NOT signal for an IFK, to re-raise the flag and wiggle it so I'll talk to them. I also tell them if they're calling a PK foul to make very certain of their call. Thanks for writing
