Question Number: 32548

Law 11 - Offside 6/27/2018

RE: Adult

Adenuga Olaoluwa of Jos, Plateau Nigeria asks...

Why did the first goal of Korea against Germany in match day 3 of group stage in 2018 world cup stand, when it seems the goal scorer is in an offside position?

Answer provided by Referee Joe McHugh

Hi Adenuga
Thanks for your question.
On review using VAR Video Assistant Refereeing it was shown that Tony Kross of Germany played the ball with a toe poke to his team mate who missed the pass and it went to the Korean player who scored. As the ball was clearly played by Germany it could not be offside so 100% correct decision. It showed the benefit of VAR technology

Hi Adenuga,
of there is a useful purpose for the VAR then these kind of decisions are wonderful for they are not opinion driven but hard line technology freezing the play and allowing us to sort out the choices and consequences quickly and efficiently. Congrats to SK and the curse of the previous cup holders continues world cup last time losers next time! lol Mexico owes SK BIG TIME and they know it!
Cheers
