Question Number: 32674Other 8/29/2018RE: Competitive Under 19 STEVE LARSEN of Sebastopol, CA United States asks...Does USSoccer still allow a "golden Goal" format to determine the outcome of a game? Answer provided by Referee Richard Dawson HI Steve, I do not believe so, I think they conform to FIFA/IFAB standards for finding a result to decide competitive matches. Cheers

These laws do not allow for the use of a 'golden goal' to decide games. Law 10 states that: ''When competition rules require a winning team after a drawn match or home and-away tie, the only permitted procedures to determine the winning team are: away goals rule two equal periods of extra time not exceeding 15 minutes each kicks from the penalty mark''

In February 2004, the IFAB announced that after the 2004 European Championshipin Portugal, the golden goal would be removed from the Laws of the Game. Since the 2002 FIFA World Cup in Korea / Japan the golden goal has never been used in the event of a tied match during the knockout stage of a tournament. Tied games are decided by Kicks from the Penalty Mark.
