Law 8 - The Start and Restart of Play 10/18/2018

RE: Rec Adult

Barry Stewart of Chilliwack, BC Canada asks...

I saw an odd one in our 60+ league game last week. At our kick-off, our striker was ready to put the ball in play when he was joined on the centre line by a team mate.

The ref waved him out of the circle, saying only one player could be there.

Huh?

I must admit, since the Law changed, to allow a pass to the back, most teams only send one player into the circle for their kick-off.

Had this ref also seen the trend and mistook it for a new Law? (Can we not ALL be in the circle at our kick-off, if we want to be?)

I didn't bring it up with him at a break but will if I see it again.

Answer provided by Referee Joe McHugh

Hi Barry
Yeah probably the consequences of looking at the way teams now kick off.
As you say all eleven can be in the centre circle. One player can be in the opponents half.
Anyway I suspect it was no big deal as most players want to have time on the ball usually outside the circle.

HI Barry, No all 11 can be there??
Passing back now allows for a quick spring forward too as a tactical ploy. Referee just a wee bit confused here it seems?
Cheers
