I just read an article on a 'Referee' website in the soccer specific section. It said that a dismissed coach/player has the right to return to the field after the game is over, this immediately struck me as odd. It also said that any misconduct they engage in can be further documented. Thoughts?

This does happen at all levels. The game is over so as long as the dismissed player / coach behaves in a respectful manner there is no issue. If however his return is to berate the match official or confront an opponent then the actions get added on as misconduct in the sending off report.
As to whether it happens or not depends on the circumstances. Most times there is no need to return as everyone is leaving the field if play anyway. The player will probably have showered and changed so not fussed about what is happening on the field. However in the case say of a final where there is s medal ceremony a dismissed player can and will return to the FOP.
A coach may come on to speak with his players, maybe even calm some down if it was a feisty game.
Sometimes a dismissed player / coach may return to apologies for their actions to the referee.

Hi Gary,
we do not own the public space on where the match is played we only control the match during the time it is being played. Once its over, we go home . If they return before we made it to the car they best keep in mind civility and if they choose to interact they best remember what is done or said, these things could be added to any misconduct report. Nothing wrong if an apology is extended or a reasoned talk if acceptable & time allows.
