Question Number: 35149

Law 12 - Fouls and Misconduct 10/10/2023

RE: Amateur Adult

Mühenned Elseyho of Kahramanmara, Kahramanmara Turkey asks...

Hi ,
The defender touched the ball to control it but was unable to do so, and it went to the goalkeeper and he caught it. Does the referee award an indirect free kick in this case?

https://youtu.be/BCw3SAh5Z-Q?feature=shared

Thank you

Answer provided by Referee Joe McHugh

Hi Muhenned
Thanks for the question
In the video the player did not DELIBERATELY kick the ball TO the goalkeeper so it is not an offence.

As you correctly point out the player tried to control the ball but failed to do so and the ball then went into the penalty area where the goalkeeper was entitled to pick the ball up.

Only clear deliberate offence should be punished in these instances not mis plays, tackles, mis control etc. They are not not deliberate kicks to a goalkeeper.

Answer provided by Referee Peter Grove

Hi Mühenned,
The law holds that it is only an offence for the goalkeeper to handle the ball if it has been deliberately kicked to them by a team mate. So in the case of an accidental misdirection of the ball to the keeper as in this case, there is no offence and so no free kick should be given.
