Question Number: 35793Law 12 - Fouls and Misconduct 11/9/2024RE: Senior 5 Adult Colin Davies of Brighton , Sussex UK asks...From a through ball the GK takes a forward out with a reckless tackle! The GK was cautioned. At this point the AR raises the flag for offside !! The Referee gives offside but said the caution will stand due to the severity of the challenge. Is this correct ? Answer provided by Referee Joe McHugh Hi Colin Thanks for the question. Yes the referee was 100% correct. A reckless challenge is a cautionable offence. A first offence such as offside does not negate the fact that there was a second offence of a reckless challenge. While the restart will be an IDFK for offside the caution must remain. It cannot be any other way as it is deemed misconduct. As you know misconduct can and does occur without a playing offence and /or the ball can be out of play.
Let me pose this scenario. Say the goalkeeper launched two footed in the air with studs showing in a clear serious foul play tackle hurting the attacker would it be fair that no sanction should be taken for that challenge even if it was offside? The answer is no and the goalkeeper should still be dismissed for SFP. The same applies to cautions. Okay the best decision is to get play stopped for the offside offence yet that is not always 100% possible due to missed flags or a wait and see flags.
