Question Number: 35810

Law 12 - Fouls and Misconduct 11/23/2024

Petr of Prague, Czech Republic Czech Republic asks...

Hello,

three 'dangerous play' situations inspired by real-life matches please.

Situation 1:
A5 is sitting on the ground with the ball under his legs. B33 applies pressure to him, but does not touch the player or the ball. Then A5 takes the ball in his hands. Is it IDFK (dangerous play) for Team B? Or DFK (handball) for Team B?

Situation 2:
A5 is sitting on the ground with the ball under his legs. B33 carefully kicks the ball. Then A5 takes the ball in his hands. Is it IDFK (dangerous play) for Team B? Or DFK (handball) for Team B? Or DFK (B33's kick) for Team A?

Situation 3:
A5 is sitting on the ground with the ball under his legs. B33 kicks the ball and hits a player. Then A5 takes the ball in his hands. Is it IDFK (dangerous play) for Team B? Or DFK (handball) for Team B? Or DFK (B33's kick) for Team A?

Thank you very much!

Answer provided by Referee Joe McHugh

Hi Petr
In all three scenarios it is a direct free kick for handling. There may be a doubt about playing in a dangerous manner in the scenarios yet even if it was PIADM the referee punishes the more serious offence which is handling.

Law 5 tells us that “” The referee …..punishes the more serious offence, in terms of sanction, restart, physical severity and tactical impact, when more than one offence occurs at the same time””

It could only be PIADM if the referee signaled for that offence quickly before the ball is handled or a free kick is awarded to A if the player on Team a is kicked again before PIADM or the handling is called.
