Question Number: 35888Law 3 - The Players 2/22/2025RE: PREMIER (RTD) Professional Ishiaku Ibrahim of LOKOJA, KOGI NIGERIA asks...Is it an offence for a captain of a team to give his captain ban to a team mate during play? Answer provided by Referee Joe McHugh Hi Ishiaku Generally a referee might be advised of a captain change yet if it is just happened it is not something that a referee would be concerned about if there was a change One sees armband changes at substitutions and I suppose referees make a mental note of the new captain at that time.

View Referee Joe McHugh profileAnswer provided by Referee Richard Dawson Hi Ishiaku, there is no offence, the captain's armband is principally ceremonial, awarded as a sign of respect from his or her team. Captains are generally present at the coin flip though their attendance is not mandatory. Mind you I suggest as a simple courtesy to advise the referee if there was to be a change! The referee might well wish to relay information through the individual captain to make something known rather than talk to everyone. The referee may well be inclined to perhaps listen to one captain then 11 hollering angry players. Cheers
