Question Number: 67

Law 4 - Players Equipment 11/20/1999

RE: Under 13

Dee of , asks...

A player was told he had to remove his medical ID bracelet (diabetic) or he could not play. To the best of my knowledge the ref was wrong about this..Yes his coach knew he was diabetic "but" could he explain to the medical attendants what his insulin requirements were!.Please tell me the official rules on this.

Answer provided by Referee glenn 11/21/1999

Law 4, and specifically paragraph 4.2 of advice to the referees as published by the USSF directs that the referee consider medical bracelets. If the bracelets poses no danger to the players and additionally provides no advantage then it can be allowed. There are ways in which items such as these can be accomodated or made more safe.

Answer provided by Referee Stacy Kalstrom 11/22/1999

Mr. Glenn is correct, the laws of the game provide for the medical bracelet to be worn. I just ask the player to tape ove it so that no edges are showing. This goes for a medical necklace as well. It can be taped to the chest and it will pose no problem to the player or other players.
