The Fourth Official

RE: Pro Adult

John of Glasgow, Ubkted Kngdom asks...

Hi..I watched a football match on television at the weekend and one of the managers was asked why he made a half-time substitution and he replied " The fourth official gave me the nod and told me that as he had been booked and had commited another couple of fouls he was in danger of being sent off so to save that I substituted him ". Is this within the remit of the fourth official or should he in any way advise a manager of anything like this..Thanks in advance for your help..John

Answer provided by Referee Chuck Fleischer

I have never done this officially, because I can't; it isn?t one of my powers or duties. Unofficially is an entirely different thing, a quiet word to the captain about the future. A word to the cautioned player about recalcitrant behaviour? A quick word to a nearby manager? ..All these things go a long way in managing a player's action and all we really do is ensure fair play -- thereby enforcing the Laws of the Game, our primary duty. ..Regards,

sounds like good man management. Probably was put forward out of context, and did not come across as intended. Just a silly question if you ask me.
