Question Number: 8515Law 6 - Assistant Referee RE: Grade 9 Under 12 Jacquelyn of Gonzales, Louisisana USA asks...I am a AR on the side where the teams are. When I am reffering a game The coaches will always stand right on the line so I can't see down the line. I will ask them to scoot back but in a few seconds they are back. What do I do? Answer provided by Referee Keith Contarino You ask nicely, then you get your center to intervene. I usually don't have much problems but I've been known to run over a coach or 2 if they're in the way. I also like to make comments like "I probably missed that ball going out but couldn't see it because you were in the way!"

And sometimes I seem confused and can't see the ball in touch or raise my flag too early (all depending on whisk coach is in the way). I have the nasty habit of telling the referee a coach was on the field when a goal was scored. He gets a tongue lashing and they don't get their goal. In America coaches think they are, ever so, special and want to run the show, they just don't understand the game is for the players and whatever they have to contribute, beyond tactical instructions, may be failing to conduct themselves in a responsible manner. When you get to be the referee support your assistants, MAKE the coach want to stay out of the way. Make him behave. If the refuses to behave expel him instantly. ..It is a game, it is for the players. Let the adults watch and enjoy! ..Regards,
