Question Number: 9543

Law 13 - Free Kicks

RE: Adult/Comp league Adult

Matthew Crawford of Gloucester, Va USA asks...

I have used my shoulder several time to either trap the ball, run through the ball, or knock the ball to another team mate. I have been called for it several time, as a hand ball. The man that refs our games, refs by high school rules. I though at any age/level you could use you shoulder, as long as is wasn't your arm or hand? Can you clear this up for me?

Answer provided by Referee Keith Contarino

The shoulder, even in high school is considered part of the arm. The only part of the shoulder that is not, is the inside and you cannot direct the ball with the inside part of the shoulder. Anytime you are able to control the ball with your shoulder, you are guilty of deliberately handling the ball

Answer provided by Referee Chuck Fleischer

The referees are right, you handled the ball. Find another way to use your chest. ..Regards,
