You-Call-It 56 Question...In the dying moments of a tied match where the teams knew that KFTPM would be required to determine a winner, a blue team player is hurt and hobbles off the pitch to receive treatment during the continuous play. The referee whistles the match over, noting the blue team only had ten players and asks the blue team what happened? The blue team states their player has injured his leg and was only off seeking treatment. The referee asks if he can continue or do we reduce to equate? The player seems to want to resume his place at the centre circle with the others, the coaches prefer he does not but he ignores them and returns to the FOP as part of the 11 team members. To the amazement of all, the two teams are tied after ten shots apiece . The red team had missed their 11th shot so the 11th blue player was our injured blue player who is limping badly, now collapses claiming he is not able too continue, so the best blue pk kicker who had already shot now steps up and buries the pk shot wining the match.
Should the referee allow this or should the 11th miss by red be discounted given there was no chance to reduce to equate?
Our HintOur Answer...The New LOTG rewrite has added that clause that on KFTPM you can reduce to equate at any point to achieve fairness. You simply note the circumstances , tell the 11th kicker his turn is declared a miss and continue. The WHOLE concept of FAIR PLAY is directed to the SPIRIT of the LOTG and this approach is consistant with that philosophy. I know some of you got a bit caught up in cautioning the blue player for seeking treatment at the end of the match but that was a red herring to what the point here is that FAIRNESS rules.

The latest version of law 10 states that:
"If at the end of the match and before or during the kicks one team has a
greater number of players than its opponents, it must reduce its numbers to
the same number as its opponents and the referee must be informed of the
name and number of each player excluded. Any excluded player is not eligible
to take part in the kicks (except as outlined below)"
The sprit of the law is to avoid the situation where the "Last" kicker of one team is essentially competing against the "best" player of the other team.
I would discount the 11th miss by red since there was no chance to reduce to equate. In other words the best(first kicker) of the red team would essentially compete against the best(first kicker) blue player. AskTheref.com Educating and Amusing The Soccer Referee Since October 11, 1999<-->
