Question Number: 13437

Law 1- The Field 8/4/2006

RE: Competitive Adult

Aaron Sargent of Sidcup, Kent England asks...

Why are triangular corner flags used sometimes rather than square corner flags?
Is there a logical answer to this question? I just wondered why there is a difference in the shape and weather there are any rules/regulations or reasons behind this.
Thanks in advance!

Answer provided by Referee Ben Mueller

The law on the field of play does not specify the shape of them. It states that they must be at least 5 feet for player safety. As long as they are safe, they are ok.

Answer provided by Referee Chuck Fleischer

The Laws of the Game require corner flagposts be placed at each corner of the field. It says nothing about a flag! I suppose that gives grounds keepers a little latitude.

Regards,

Answer provided by Referee Richard Dawson

Hi Aaron,
I know of no requirements that state the shape of the flag must be rectangular as in a NATIONAL style country flag. Although a triangle is more like a penant they serve only as a visable marker for a slender stick!
Cheers
