Question Number: 14033League Specific 10/3/2006RE: Select Rick Gale of Germantown, Wisconsin USA asks...I know that when play is stopped when the ball is still in play the normal restart is a drop ball. Does the WIAA have an amendment to this rule. I've seen several times during high school games where play was stopped and the restart was an indirect free kick for the team that had possesion when play was stopped.
Thanks for your help. Answer provided by Referee Chuck Fleischer NFHS is different as far as the ball in and out of play goes, among many other things. Never, never confuse NFHS High School Soccer Rules with The Laws of the Game, they differ significantly from what the International Football Association Board wrote and FIFA adopted for the rest of the world.
What NFHS states in their Rule 9, Sect 3 is this: In the case of a temporary suspension due to an injury or any unusual situation, if one team is clearly in possession of the ball, the game shall be restarted by an indirect free kick by the team in possession of the ball at the point where the ball was when play was suspended.
