Question Number: 14336

Law 12 - Fouls and Misconduct 11/1/2006

RE: rec Under 15

Bob Roach of Charlottesville, VA USA asks...

This question is a follow up to question 14313

In response to 14313, I have reffed rec games where two players will go for the ball, shoulder to shoulder, all legal. Neither gains an advantage nor the ball, and as they battle for the ball it starts to become heated. If it begins to get out of control, I have on occasion stopped play, had a little chat with both players, then restarted with a dropped ball.

My intent is to keep control and not let it progress to the point where cautions and cards are necessary. Usually only takes one time and everyone gets the message. I ref mostly rec games so my goal is to a)keep it safe and b)keep it fun.

Answer provided by Referee Ben Mueller

Players can play the ball. Sometimes shoulder to shoulder contact will occur as a natural part of play. Players cannot play the opponent or bump the opponent off of the ball. If they do that is ful play and charging should be called.

Answer provided by Referee Keith Contarino

I understand where you're coming from but disagree with your method. I just think stopping play to have a chat is a bad idea. Wait until play has already stopped. In the case of the two players getting heated, a simple, "both of you watch it" should do.
