Character, Attitude and Control 10/23/2007

RE: Recreational Adult

Sarah Manning of Valley Springs, CA USA asks...

This question is a follow up to question 17258

Funny you say a ref never tells a coach how to coach because in our league apparently it is ok to do so. Even better when it is a ref who is a board member & also a friend of the opposing team!! Love the back scratching that goes in Calaveras County!!This is just one reason my child who happens to be a great player will not continue in soccer....we wil find another sport after 6 years of soccer.

Answer provided by Referee Richard Dawson

Sarah,
actually little humor to be seen, if you let an adult who conducts themselves inappropriately to limit your child?s' options then you let those butt heads win. If your child is good and enjoys the game then fight to make it better!

Do not just blame, fix the problems.
Do you think we do what we do here for any other reason?

While I rarely say never, the referees here on this panel are not part of the problem you face, they are in fact part of the solution.

You could document and detail the allegations, video and record, monitor and gather support. Confrontation is unpleasant but if we ignore or avoid it it does not go away it simply is quieter around you! A quality league provides and accepts active support and input from all participants.

You perceive there are serious deficiencies in the standard of officiating, discipline, organization, coaching, policies then please do something about them do not give up and go away. Whether there is an issue or you perceive an issue both requires some affirmative action to set the records straight and clear the air. Those that are in power or set policy even in small environments get to like the feeling of making things happen.

A cage rattle and new accountability is not a bad thing if it is with the right intent. Justice is a concept that unless acted upon remains just a word starting with a J!
Cheers

My colleague has given you his ideas on how to address this. I forwarded the incident[s] to CalNorth's Youth Referee Administrator. As of 9:15 PM 23 October he knows what's happening in Calaveras County.

Regards,
