Question Number: 17922

Law 16 - Goal Kick 11/15/2007

RE: Adult

Mark of Los Angeles, CA USA asks...

This question is a follow up to question 8507

with reference to 8507, perhaps "jeff" meant "awarded a goal kick" instead of "awarded a goal". The next part follows mroe logically and it is a pretty good question...

Answer provided by Referee Gary Voshol

Wow, ancient history. Glad to see people are reading this site from the beginning. We attempt to go back and correct previous answers from time to time, as the Laws and official interpretations change.

Reworded 8507: "A goal KICK is awarded. Just before it is going to be kicked the offensive player who is about to kick the ball pick up the ball and move it quickly to the other side of the goal box and kicks it to surprise the other team. is it legal"

That would generally be considered to be timewasting, and should not be allowed.

Answer provided by Referee Keith Contarino

I looked at 8507 and will post another answer later. If a goal kick is awarded, once the ball is placed on the ground it stays there. USSF has ruled there is no reason other than time wasting to move the ball. On a practical note, this tactic fools no one and the opponents simply move as the taker of the goal kick moves.
