Question Number: 18882Law 3 - Number of Players 4/24/2008RE: High School Dave E of Clarkston, WA USA asks...High School Substitutions
At today's high school match, a coach who is also a referee, criticized us for insisting that substitutes were not permitted to enter the field until the player being replaced left the field. He said that is only a FIFA thing.
I checked the Procedure for Substitution in the NFHS Rules Book. I could not see where it was specified that substitutes must wait for the player being replaced to leave the field.
For high school matches, may I wait for the exiting player to leave the field before beckoning the substitute to enter the field?
We do not use a separate scorer/timer.
Thank you. Answer provided by Referee Chuck Fleischer Substitutes are not to enter until they are beckoned by the referee, beckon them on when you choose. Interesting note here, there are three occasions when a coach may substitute a player without having first reported to the scorer or to the nearest official. Know what they are? I do and I force the teams to comply with the substitution procedure as written because it is so screwed up and maybe the coach will bitch to NFHS and get it changed...
