Law 16 - Goal Kick 7/21/2008

RE: Competive Other

Donat Paulin of Campbellton, N.-B., Canada asks...

A goalie takes a goal kick and kick the ball over his goal line. What is the call ? Re-take the kick or a corner kick..!!!

Answer provided by Referee Gary Voshol

It depends on what part of the goal line the ball crossed.

For a ball to be in play on a goal kick, it must clear the penalty area (PA) and enter the remainder of the field. If that doesn't happen, the goal kick is retaken. If it happens repeatedly, you might consider that the goalkeeper is wasting time, and give her a caution for her efforts.

However, the ball could be kicked nearly laterally, cross out of the side of the PA, and then cross the goal line between the PA and the flag. In that case, the ball was in play for a short time, so the restart would be a corner kick.

Answer provided by Referee Keith Contarino

If the ball cleared the penalty area first, the restart is a corner kick. If not, the restart is a goal kick.

Answer provided by Referee Steve Montanino

The ball must go into the field to be in play. If it goes straight out over the goal line without leaving the penalty area into the field first then the kick is retaken. If the ball leaves the penalty area and goes over the goal line then the restart is a corner kick.

Answer provided by Referee Gene Nagy

Donat, here is the real deal: the ball must go BEYOND the penalty area or it is a retake. Now 'beyond' means that it has to completely cross the 18 yd line or one of the sides of the penalty area. If it left the penalty area via the goal line, it did not go 'beyond'. Oh, and by the way, same applies to any DFK or IFK taken by the defence in their penalty area. Remember, the word is 'beyond'.
