Question Number: 19721

League Specific 8/11/2008

RE: Professional

Sarah K of san antonio, tx usa asks...

Quick question this morning...Was watching Olympic Soccer last few days and announcers made comments to the effect that because a player received a (single) yellow card, he would not be eligible to play next match. Is this a 'special-to-the-Olympics' rule or something new I should be aware of?
cheers-
Sarah

Answer provided by Referee Gary Voshol

Many competitions have a yellow card (caution) accumulation rule. I could not find a reference for the Olympics, but typically if a single player receives 2 cautions in the games in the group stage, he or she is suspended for the next game. When teams move to the knockout rounds, the slate is usually wiped clean and restarted. So a player that receives a caution in both the quarterfinal and semifinal game would be suspended for the final.

Answer provided by Referee Chuck Fleischer

Knowing announcers in America they probably have it wrong. Please don't listen to them on points of Law or tournament rule.
