Law 15 - Throw In 11/12/2009

RE: Travel Division II Under 13

Barry Templin of Douglassville, PA U.S.A. asks...

A player is taking a throw in in their offensive zone. The throw in lands in play but eventually rolls over the end line without any one touching it. Should the result be a goal kick going the other way.

Answer provided by Referee Dennis Wickham

Yes. The ball is in play on a properly taken throw in when it enters the field of play (touching the ground is irrelevant). When the ball then leaves the field, last touched by the attacking player/thrower, the restart is for the defense. Goal kick.

Answer provided by Referee Joe McHugh

Hi Coach Templin
Once the ball enter the field of play at a throw in it is in play. What subsequently happens after that is just part of normal play. In this scenario when the ball goes out over the goal line it is a goal kick. If it goes back out over the sideline it is throw in to the opponents. On a throw in where the ball does not enter the field of play or touches the ground before entering the field of play the throw in is retaken.

Answer provided by Referee Gary Voshol

The ball was in play when it crossed the touchline and was released by the thrower. It then went out of play again when it went over the end line. Across the goal line, last touched by the attackers = goal kick.

You don't specifically say which end line the ball went across. Theoretically the player could have thrown a long ball back across his own goal line and the restart would be a corner kick.

Answer provided by Referee Richard Dawson

If the thro -in was correctly performed the ball is in play upon entering the field (ball contacts he boundryline suffices) and the team taking the throw in is the last team to have touched the ball. Thus if that ball goes directly out of play into touch beyond the goal line or back over the touchline the restart will be in favour of the opposition as a corner kick, goal kick or throw-in depending upon which end of the field it occurs from.
Cheers
