Question Number: 23588Character, Attitude and Control 6/30/2010RE: Select Under 19 Erik of Arlington, TX USA asks...In Ghana's 2nd goal against USA, a player basically ran in between the last two USA defenders and had an open shot at goal. If one of the USA players was aware enough to commit a careless or reckless foul against the Ghana player, just to prevent him from getting by, what would you think the result would be? Both defenders were about level with each other, so I don't see how this would be the case of denying a goal scoring opportunity. I would have grabbed a fist full of jersey, or knocked the player to the turf. Much rather give a free kick 25 yards out (and probably pick up a yellow card) than a goal in extra time. Heck, even a red card may be worth it in that situation if you're playing to win. Answer provided by Referee Joe McHugh Hi Erik Clearly you are not getting the message nor have you read or heard of FIFA's Ten Point Fair Play Code. I suggest you read it and perhaps show even a little Fair Play when you next play http://www.fifa.com/aboutfifa/worldwideprograms/fifacampaigns/fairplay/code.html
