RE: Select Under 19

Erik of Arlington, TX USA asks...

This question is a follow up to question 23588

I don't see how one can consider fouling as not playing fairly or cheating. Most of these acts are done in full view of the referee, and aren't disguised in any way, and are done knowing the consequences. When the referees do their jobs, then the appropriate punishment is handed out.

I find what Luis Suarez of Uruguay did by preventing the game winning goal for Ghana in the waning seconds of extra time as perfectly fine and heroic. He selflessly gave up playing in the next match to allow his country to have a chance to win. Trophys get handed out for winning. Everything else is not relevant.

FIFA seems to agree, as they decided just to hand down the normal punishment for denying a goal scoring opportunity, a one match ban. If they felt this was something worse, the suspension would have been greater.

Answer provided by Referee Dennis Wickham

Players foul when they cannot prevail using skill, speed and intelligence. While some believe that the end justifies the mean, I believe that character counts.
