Question Number: 23972

Kicks From The Penalty mark 9/20/2010

RE: Rec/Select

Todd Wendorf of Marysville, PA United States asks...

This question is a follow up to question 23932

Just a clarification...because this is KFTPM, there is never a second chance for the kicker to follow his/her shot. Once they have kicked the ball, they are done. The keeper, on the other hand, has the opportunity to make multiple plays on the ball to keep it out of the goal (and most likely should!!!).

Correct?

Answer provided by Referee Joe McHugh

Hi Todd
That is indeed correct and the goalkeeper can touch the ball many times in an attempt to stop the ball entering the goal. The penalty kick is over when the referee decides so.

Answer provided by Referee Jason Wright

That's correct. On occasion a goal has been awarded because a keeper has initially parried the ball and thought that was sufficient for a save, only to have the ball bounce off the post and trickle over the line.
