Question Number: 24455League Specific 1/3/2011RE: Adult Marguerite Higham of Leyland, Lancashire United Kingdom asks...If a player has 5 yellow cards on the 31st December, I understand these are then carried over into the New Year (i.e. no automatic one match ban) until such time as that player has accrued 10 yellow cards. Is this correct? Answer provided by Referee Gene Nagy Marguerite, your question does not refer to a FIFA Law. It is covered by league or tournament regulations and they vary greatly. You need to contact your local association for the answer to this question. They can be reached at: County Ground, Thurston Rd, Leyland PR25 2LF, Tel: 44 1772 624000

In general though once a player reaches 5 yellow cards there is an automatic one match ban. As seasons don't run on a calendar year I cannot see how the player would be allowed to 'escape' not serving the suspension when he reaches 5 cards by 31st Dec.
