Question Number: 24465League Specific 1/8/2011RE: Adult Marguerite Higham of Leyland, Lancashire United Kingdom asks...This question is a follow up to question 24455 Follow Up to 24455. Thanks for giving me the contact at Thurston Road, but do they not govern the amateur leagues? The reason for my question is specific to my team Newcastle and the player Joey Barton who accrued his fifth booking after 31/12/11. So what is the ruling for the FA Premier league, and does my original question now have an answer? Answer provided by Referee Joe McHugh Hi Marguerite According to the FA Disciplinary Rules if a player receives 5 cautions between the first day of the season and 31st December they will be suspended for a period of 1 match . If a player receives a 5th caution after the 31st December they will be warned as to their future conduct. If a player receives 10 cautions between the first day of the season and the second Sunday in April they will be suspended for a period of 2 matches. Players from the Premier League have benefited from the change to the date of the yellow card amnesty with the cut off date for five cautions now reduced to 31 December. Previously, players collecting five yellow cards prior to the final day in February were subject to a one-match suspension. Sanctions for players accumulating 10 and 15 cautions remain in place as do their respective amnesty periods. In summary Joey Barton will not be suspended for one game on reaching 5 cautions after the 31/12/2010 but he does carry forward the 5 cautions and he will face a two game suspension should he reach 10 cautions by 10th April 2011.

If you wanted to know about the FA, their Rule Book is available on this site: http://www.thefa.com/TheFA/Disciplinary. However, Referee Joe McHugh has outlined what sort of trouble Joey Barton is in.
