Question Number: 28130

Law 12 - Fouls and Misconduct 1/22/2014

RE: Epl Adult

quentin of Auckland, New Zealand asks...

This question is a follow up to question 24465

If a player's 5th yellow results in a red card, do they serve an automatic 2 match ban?

Answer provided by Referee Joe McHugh

Hi Quentin
That is a matter for the competition disciplinary rules. For instance in the UK Premier League a player that accumulates 5 cautions is suspended for one game. However if a Player receives their 5th caution after the 31st December they will be warned as to their future conduct and no suspension shall be imposed. The player then has to accumulate 10 cautions to be suspended for one game.
If a player is sent off for two cautions and the player has accumulated cautions on his disciplinary record the disciplinary committee may add to the player's suspension by taking those into account. In the absence of a competition rule I would say that the red card dismissal is treated in its own right rather than an additional suspension for caution accumulation.

Answer provided by Referee Gary Voshol

Bans for accumulation of yellow cards are competition (league) rules, not part of the Laws of the Game. Those rules should address the situation. If they do not, then the competition authority will make the decision.
