Question Number: 26024

Law 16 - Goal Kick 3/3/2012

RE: Other

Scott of Vancouver, Canada asks...

Recently saw a video where a goalkeeper takes his goal kick, the ball leaves the penalty area gets caught up in the wind and then gets blown back into his own net.

Is this a good goal (own goal) or would this be ruled a corner kick?

Thanks,

Answer provided by Referee Dennis Wickham

An own goal may not be scored directly on a goal kick. Unless the ball touches another player, the restart is a corner kick.

Answer provided by Referee Joe McHugh

Hi Scott
A team cannot score directly in its own goal from a goal kick. the ball is in play when it leave the penalty area. However a goal cannot be awarded unless it touches another player. If it does not the restart is an corner kick.

Answer provided by Referee Jason Wright

A team cannot score an own goal directly from any restart, so it would be a corner kick. If, however, it touched a 2nd player of any team then it would be a goal.
