Question Number: 26030Law 16 - Goal Kick 3/4/2012RE: Rec, Competitive Adult William Guynes of Mechanicsville, MD USA asks...This question is a follow up to question 26024 The video of the wind-own-goal that the poster references was actually not a goal kick but a goal keeper punt that was placed on the ground. Is was an amateur, Israeli, men's practice match. The Guardian had an article on it that incorrectly identified it as a goal kick. The goal was [apparently] correctly awarded as a result. Answer provided by Referee Joe McHugh Hi William Many thanks for this. The incident just did not seem to 'look right' based on the goal kick so your information explains a lot. However this video is a goal kick http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=tYJttBJq6lw Perhaps the ball was touched by the goalkeeper on the line. However had it not done so the goal should not be awarded.

View Referee Joe McHugh profileAnswer provided by Referee Michelle Maloney If the ball was in play, and the keeper punts, passes or throws the ball such that the wind catches it and puts it into the goal, then it is indeed a goal. The key in theses situations is whether the ball was in play first. At a goal kick, the ball was not in play until the keeper kicked it into play, and the Laws are written such that a team cannot score on themselves from a restart.
