Law 13 - Free Kicks 1/19/2013

RE: Adult

James of Barrow In Furness, England asks...

Just taking up refereeing and can someone tell me where the free kick would take place if the goalkeeper handled the ball on his line from a back pass, i think it would be the 6 yard box, am i correct and if he handled the ball from a back pass in front of the 6 yard box, would the kick be taken from where he handled.

Answer provided by Referee Joe McHugh

Hi James
Correct decision is an IDFK on the 6 yard line parallel to the goal line at the point nearest to where the infringement occurred. So if the goalkeeper say handled it at a post the IDFK would on the 6 yard line directly opposite that post.
On a free kick to the defending team for an offence committed inside the goal area the free kick can be taken from any point inside the goal area.

Answer provided by Referee Keith Contarino

For any infringement of the Laws that takes place in the defending goal area for which an indirect free kick is awarded the attacking team, the kick takes place on the six yard line
