Question Number: 29146Law 14 - Penalty kick 1/31/2015RE: Other muhammad iqbal of karachi, sindh pakistan asks...what is the clear answer of of Afghanistan vs Maldivies penalty kick in afc challenge cup 2014 goal or no goal when During the shootout the Maldives scored one of the funniest penalties ever, as during the build-up to the spot-kick one player fell, literally, on his face. As the Maldives #12 ran up to take his penalty he slipped flat on his belly, only to quickly get up and bury the ball past a distracted Afghan keeper. Answer provided by Referee Joe McHugh Hi Muhammad If I was officiating it would not be allowed. It would be a retake. The reason I would go with a retake is that it was not a genuine fall in my opinion. Now where it gets tricky is that the law only mentions an illegal feint once the player has completed his run-up which is considered an infringement of Law 14 and an act of unsporting behaviour for which the player must be cautioned. One can argue here that the player did not complete his run up and in fact started a second run up after he got to his feet. Perhaps a wiley old referee might get on the whistle, check that the player did not hurt himself on the fall and resart the penalty kick procedure.

Now I suspect it was to see what the reaction was and if it was ok for him to continue, however I cannot be sure if the fall was accidental or deliberate. Nor can I tell if the referee nodded at him or said it was ok continue? I like to think if I was officiating I could be as REF McHugh states, a wily referee who hits the whistle to see if he is ok then restart. Cheers
