Question Number: 30295Law 11 - Offside 4/15/2016RE: Intermediate Under 13 Phil of Tarzana, CA United States asks...This question is a follow up to question 30287 Even with the additional information, the deliberate move by the defender, who blocked the shot headed for the goal according to the first post, could be considered a deliberate save, right. All depends upon the time to react, distance to the goal, speed of the shot...doesn't it? Answer provided by Referee Joe McHugh Hi Phil
It is in the opinion of the referee. IFAB has opined that a save is an action by a player to stop the ball when it is going into or very close to the goal using any part of the body except the hands (unless a goalkeeper within their own penalty area).
Key words there for me are INTO or VERY CLOSE. Time to react, speed would not be so relevant on a save yet would be on a deliberate play.
