Question Number: 32201Law 12 - Fouls and Misconduct 1/29/2018RE: Rec Adult russell of Sydney, Australia asks...The sooner we have widespread universal retrospective sanctions - the better. Not sure what is worse, the play acting by Malcom in the penalty decision, or, the gullible officials. https://theworldgame.sbs.com.au/video/1148018755516/Penalty-controversy-as-Bordeaux-shock-Lyon https://m.youtube.com/watch?v=WMCLEJMYi_Q Hate to criticise a fellow official, but how did he allow that. Answer provided by Referee Joe McHugh Hi Russell The referee guessed that the defender had made contact with the attackers foot. In real time it probably looked like the defender had gathered the standing foot of the attacker and the theatrics of the attacker was convincing. A refereee does not expect to see a player *dive* in such a reverse manner with the standing foot pulled and the legs going up in the air. It typically is the other way round. If VAR was present the referee would have seen that he was stitched up and that it was a caution for simulation. For me the French Ligue should take retrospective action against the player with a ban and a fine. Harsh lesson for the referee. He will not be too eager to guess again.

View Referee Joe McHugh profileAnswer provided by Referee Richard Dawson HI Russell, The real issue is not that the referee guessed rather than saw , PLUS I did not perceive any AR input. Rather it is whether the leagues will clamp down on the cheaters WHEN exposed and ban them from playing. THAT will stop a lot of this nonsense. A ten match ban plus fine for being a cheating disreputable role model. Time to make those who act irresponsible accountable! I assume there was no VAR at this match? Cheers
